Retreat Preparation
Arriving Well: Preparing for Your First Retreat
Priya Menon · 6 min read

Most people arrive at their first retreat already carrying the week they just finished — a rushed packing, a difficult conversation, a half-answered email. The practice, when it begins, has to work through that noise before it can reach anything quieter.
There is another way. In the two weeks before you leave, gently shorten your evenings. Sleep a little earlier. Reduce alcohol and screen time in the last hour of your day. Begin drinking a little more water. These are unglamorous suggestions, and they matter more than any single class you will take on retreat.
Pack early — a week before is not too soon — so the final days aren't spent hunting for a passport or the right shoes. Choose fewer, softer clothes than you think you need. Bring a journal you like the feel of. And leave one book behind that you were planning to bring.
On the day you travel, eat lightly. Notice the moment you cross into the retreat space. Take a slow breath. You have already begun.
